Reading Between the Lines is a series of monthly literary discussions led by special guest presenters from neighbouring universities.
This monthly event is a chance to hear an expert speak about a book they have chosen and offer a greater depth and understanding of the book.
We have copies of the book so you can read ahead of the session but it's not essential. Writers and lovers of literature will especially enjoy the unpacking of this work.
You can take part in the discussion or simply sit back and learn.
This month, the featured book for discussion is She Would Be King by Wayétu Moore, presented by Polly Williams.

ABOUT THE BOOK
_She Would Be King_ (2018) by Liberian-born, American-raised Wayétu Moore reimagines Liberia’s formative years through three mystical protagonists from across the African diaspora. Blending magic with the historical realities of nineteenth-century Liberia, the novel retraces the routes of the transatlantic slave trade from a perspective of Black unity and empowerment. This talk focuses on Gbessa, the Liberian-born heroine gifted—or cursed—with immortality, whose survival narrative enables the reclamation of both her own story and Liberian history more broadly. The novel raises questions about historical fiction as a form for representing Black women’s historical experiences, particularly where the fantastic and the historical converge.
